Ive started writing a novel but i am having some trouble with certain areas?

Help! e.g ]He/him replacements] and its difficult to write about someone in the story not only physically but emotionally too without listing all of the characteristics , its very difficult to write without it sounding like a list to be honest advice please? much appreciated
